Leadership Class

our Leadership and Communication class

Friday, 29 June 2007

Well it seems as thought his term as tally flown, we have been absolutely flat out running around like headless chickens, but let me say what an adventure. Something that I am so sure our whole class has learnt an awful lot about. We have pretty much been on a roller coaster ride through pain, laughter and tears there has been times that I know we all just wanted to throw in the towel leave the river how it is, and make it someone else’s problem. No we stuck in there and we kept at it. I think we all can take the time now and sit back and reflect on what we have done it has been a major to take on and I know we have done what we set out to do we have created awareness no longer is it a myth that the river is polluted but merely a fact and now the whole community knows. So as the holiday’s loom I know that we can sit back pat ourselves on the back and let nature take its course because we have done what we always said we would.

Movie Making

Today was the second to last day of our leadership pollution of the Hautapu river class. We have less than one week of school to the term break and our options are only on once a week. We have been extremely busy making a movie to create awareness. We have traveled around the town have dug deep and a lot of us I am sure have found hidden talents that have been dusted with cobwebs (acting I mean)

It has been quite an adventure with all of us playing vital parts in the success of the movie and ensuring that we get the message across. We are planning to post our movie on utube sooo watch this space.

This afternoon we are hoping to edit our work and show it in the celebration assembly of the whole school this is just another way we hope we can get the word out because I feel as though younger students or people are just as important as the elders because as the saying goes we are the future.

Well happy blogging.

Friday, 15 June 2007

Well, another day has gone and it seems as though there is soo much to do in soo little time. Our little class seems to be running round headless in last bid to publish newspaper articles, prepare blogs and update wikis. At the moment we are getting ready for end of term reports and are hping that everything we set out to do and asked to do is now completed. Well have to go happy blogging see you next week

Visiting

Today we visited a variety of businesses, and all of which had their own ways of saving the river and recycling. First of all we visited Byfords redimix (a concret distriduters) We discovered that their ways of recycling were extremly sufficent and their seemed absoloutly nearly no waste all of their surplus seemed to in some way be used again.
Next we visited Hutapu Pine and the information that we were given seemed to some extent irrelivant. They at a cost denied pollution or contribution to the ongoing concern of the Hautapu river. And we hpoe to find out more.
We also visited a bush reserve called the Paengaroa and discovered true beauty magnificent native trees towared the river creating true beauty.

new day

Hello and I hope all of you have had an extremely good week. Well back to saving our enviorment! The start of the day began rather adventurous with a trek down to the Hautapu river behind the school. I would have to say a very challenging start to our day to wake everyone up and get the nerves pumping it seemed as though the treacherous steep bank was going to hold very few prisoners with a couple of our class mates vowing to never step foot on such density.
But with hearts pumping hands shaking and knees trembling all of us seemed to end up at the bottom even though shoes had been taken of and beautiful uniforms soiled well back to the actual facts.
As a result from clarity tests that Michael, Teri, Ariana and Cody underwent a test to see how clear the water is i.e. how badly does silt effect our river their results have shown that if the measurement is below 1.60metres the reading is extremely poor our river turned out to be 1.65m which slots us into between poor and fair. (not extremely satisfying results)
A group of us e.g. Me- Jess, josh, Teri and Becca also did a bit of detective work ourselves looking for any type of life in the river that suggested our river wasn't polluted. Much to our disgust, it seemed as though what little life there was, was not very beneficial for the welfare of the river we found one dobson beetle with a rating of four meaning five been no pollution and getting worse to one we also found worms with a rating of one and snails that had such a low rating of zero extremely alarming!!!!!!!!!!
Doing the testing on plants was Teri and Cassandra their discoveries founded that mushrooms and toadstools were plentiful this in some ways suggests that fungi is plentiful but the most concerning is the desolation the vastness and the way the river is so exposed meaning that very few trees are protecting and filtering the river and causing unconditional erosion.
Sop as a conclusion the river needs a lot of help and it seems as though it has been neglected for to long and our help comes not a moment to soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

new blog

Welcome back to my posting today Friday the 18th of May we have a pretty muddled hectic day. But all in all a very productive one as well we have been getting down and into the work that we have needed to do publishing newspaper articles and posters around the town all aimed at creating awareness we have also attemted to purchase our own water testing kit to asisst us in our studies his will make our work alot easier without having to wait for along time whilst the council checks the water as we have aleresady discovered in the past activities that they take part in can take some time.
We have also had another meeting during the starting time of today we dicussed where we all were at in our research program and what we were aiming towards with our project.
Look forward to next week
